Strålskyddsstiftelsen, a Swedish advocacy foundation, presents a new study by Lennart Hardell and its own Mona Nilsson. In June 2026 they logged peak levels over at least two minutes with a 400 MHz to 7.2 GHz meter at Stockholm Central, in the metro, on the Arlanda Express and on an intercity train. Median peaks ran from 67,800 to 137,000 µW/m², the highest readings came at stations, not on board, and on the station's platform side the reading went past the meter's 2,500,000 µW/m² top range on all three occasions they measured there. The foundation concludes that exposure measured only at home and at work misses the commute, and calls on the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and the operators to carry out such measurements themselves.
Note: Strålskyddsstiftelsen is a Swedish advocacy foundation for radiation protection. Mona Nilsson, co-author of the study, is affiliated with Strålskyddsstiftelsen.
Exposure note: The figures are maximum peak values held for at least two minutes, measured with a handheld Safe and Sound Pro II across 400 MHz to 7.2 GHz, so each reading is everything in that band at once: base stations, the phones of fellow passengers and on-board Wi-Fi. Sweden applies the ICNIRP reference value of 10,000,000 µW/m² as a six-minute average, which a peak reading cannot be set against directly, while the EUROPAEM EMF Guideline 2016, a precautionary recommendation from a group of European doctors and researchers rather than a regulatory limit, suggests 10 µW/m² for daytime Wi-Fi exposure.

Quotes (our translation)

"Strålskyddsstiftelsen considers that this form of measurement, in order to investigate people's actual exposure, ought to be carried out by the responsible authorities, primarily the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, but also by the operators responsible, SJ, SL and Arlanda Express."

"Hitherto collected data clearly show that exposure to radio waves is generally higher in built-up areas than in sparsely populated areas, and that all measured values lie below the applicable reference values (SSMFS 2008:18). Commonly occurring mean values in large cities are 3-7 mW/m2. The highest value measured was 1300 mW/m2, which corresponds to approximately 20 % of the reference value"

"Because the study's measured values represent maximum peak values, the results cannot be compared directly with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's reference value, which is based on mean values over 6 minutes."

[original: "Eftersom studiens mätvärden representerar max toppvärden, kan resultaten emellertid inte jämföras direkt med Strålsäkerhetsmyndighetens referensvärde som bygger på medelvärden över 6 minuter."]
