Researchers map German-language EMF misinformation on social media

Eder and colleagues, an interdisciplinary team from the Technical University of Munich, CΒ³ team GbR and the sine-Institut, analyze over 430,000 posts from more than 16,000 accounts on YouTube, Telegram and Twitter/X, in the Journal of Radiological Protection. The study covers German-language social media only, flagging posts as misinformation when claims lack support in or contradict official positions of BfS, SSK and BAFU. According to the research, the flagged content circulates in a pseudo-expert register within broader conspiracy ecosystems, sustained by commercial and ideological motivations. The paper is currently an Accepted Manuscript in press, a watermarked PDF of the peer-reviewed version, ahead of the final version of record.
Note: The study was commissioned by the German radiation-protection authority BfS (project 3621 EMF 106). Posts were flagged as misinformation when claims lacked support in or contradicted official positions of BfS, SSK and BAFU. By the authors' own account this criterion cannot distinguish deliberate falsehoods from legitimate scientific disagreement, critical engagement with contested EMF research would in principle be flagged, and the classifier was designed to over-flag ambiguous cases.
