Austrian commentary says data centres are degrading power quality in nearby homes, with the health link still unproven

Peter F. Mayer, who owns and publishes the Austrian blog TKP, argues that the AI data centre build-out is changing the quality of the electricity reaching nearby homes, not only how much electricity is drawn from the grid. Mayer rests the exposure case on a December 2024 Bloomberg News analysis of 770,000 home power-quality sensors across the United States, which put more than three quarters of the worst distortion readings within 50 miles of a significant data centre. He then states that no study compares data centre neighbours with a control group, and that the grid is monitored only to about 3 kilohertz while the health research on "dirty electricity" sits between 4 and 100 kilohertz.
Exposure note: Dirty electricity is a term used for high-frequency distortion riding on the 50 or 60 hertz mains supply, reported as total harmonic distortion. The 8 percent threshold Bloomberg worked to is an IEEE limit for protecting equipment rather than a health limit, and the 2026 server-room study Mayer cites was also about protecting hardware: it recorded a weak field of about 0.5 microtesla carrying 36 percent distortion on average, rising to 65 percent in working hours and to 330 percent in one instance, against 5 to 7 percent for an office in the same building.

Quotes (our translation)

"There is a frequency range in which the health effects that have been studied occur, and practically nobody monitors it. That is a documented measurement gap."

"Grid operators typically measure harmonics only up to about 2 to 3 kHz (as did Bloomberg and the 2026 study). Health-related research on dirty electricity, however, focuses on higher frequencies, roughly 4 to 100 kHz, exactly the range in which switched-mode power supplies emit most strongly."

"That is the industry describing its own physics."

"The argument rests on a chain of circumstantial evidence: measurable exposure + plausible mechanism + symptoms overlapping with known EMF sensitivity. That is more than nothing, but it is not proof."
