Engineers measured the magnetic fields around an electric-vehicle wireless power transfer system at the Arena del Futuro test track in Italy, where charging coils are embedded in the road to power vehicles as they drive. Presented at the IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, the study mapped magnetic flux density inside and outside the vehicle under both static and dynamic conditions, with two drivers to check repeatability and find geometric hot-spots. The authors report that all measured values stayed well below the ICNIRP and IEEE exposure limits and complied with the EV-specific standards SAE J2954 and IEC 61980. They present the work as a replicable framework for checking real-world EMF compliance of in-road charging.
Note: The ICNIRP and IEEE exposure limits this study compares against are the most widely used international reference levels, but some scientists argue they are set too high because they are based on short-term heating and do not account for possible non-thermal or long-term effects.
