Japanese occupational health society renews exposure limit recommendations, with EMF limits up to 300 GHz and RF fields on its Group 2B carcinogen list

The Japan Society for Occupational Health has published its 2026-2027 occupational exposure limit recommendations in Environmental and Occupational Health Practice. Alongside chemicals, noise, heat and vibration, the document sets limits for time-varying electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields up to 300 GHz: 200 millitesla for static-field exposure of head and trunk (ceiling 2 tesla), frequency-dependent tables for low-frequency fields, and radiofrequency limits with power densities from 10 to 50 watts per square metre. The society's carcinogen classification also keeps radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in Group 2B, where it has listed them since 2015, mirroring the IARC assessment.

"The Japan Society for Occupational Health (JSOH) recommends the Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) as reference values for preventing adverse health effects on workers caused by occupational exposure to chemical substances, continuous or intermittent noise, impulsive or impact noise, heat stress, cold stress, whole-body vibration, hand-arm vibration and time-varying electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields and ultraviolet and ionizing radiation."
