Engineering review concludes "human-safe" non-thermal microwave virus inactivation lacks a demonstrated mechanism

Galati and Pavan, radar and telecommunications engineers at Tor Vergata University of Rome, review two decades of claims that human-safe GHz microwaves can destroy viruses through structure resonance energy transfer (SRET), a proposed conversion of microwave photons into virus-shaking acoustic vibrations. Their physics analysis and computations find that microwave absorption in water produces broadband heating rather than single resonant phonons, that a 6-15 V/m field warms a droplet by at most 0.0001 kelvin in two minutes, and that the SRET mechanism has never been demonstrated. The review, in the journal Viruses, also examines patents and a commercial air-sanitization device marketed on this principle.
